LAW ON ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF TURKISH LETTERS

Article 1 – The letters taken from the Latin source have been adopted by title and law of (Turkish letters) which their forms are indicated on the attached table instead of the Arabic letters that are used to write Turkish up to now.

 

Article 2 – From the date of publication of this Law, adoption and application of writings that are written in Turkish letters are compulsory in all departments and institutions of the State and in all kinds of companies, associations and private institutions.

 

Article 3 – The date of the application of the Turkish letters to the State transactions in each of the state departments can not exceed the first day of January 1929. However, it is permissible to write the investigation documents and the summary of proceedings and verdicts and the books of and tables of printed transactions in the old style until the beginning of June 1929. Land registrations and title deeds, identity books and marriage certificates and records of them, military identity and discharge papers to be given will be written in Turkish letters from the beginning of June 1929.

 

Article 4 – Acceptance of the applications made by the people from ones written in ancient Arabic letters, shall be permissible until the first day of June 1929. It is obligatory to print and write, private or official boards, signboards, notices, advertisements, commercials and cinema captions that are in Turkish, as well as all kinds of private periodicals, timely and untimely newspapers, booklets and periodicals in Turkish with Turkish letters by starting from the beginning of the month of December 1928.

 

Article 5 – It isobligatory the books which will be published in Turkish to be printed in Turkish letters by starting from the beginning of January 1929.

 

Article 6 – It is permissible to use old Arabic letters in the stenographic application until the beginning of June 1930 in all formal and special official reports. It is permissible to use the printed material such as books, laws, regulations, notebooks, tables, records and registers being used in all the departments of the State until the beginning of June 1930.

 

Article 7 – Money and stock sertificates, promissary notes, stocks and bonds, stamps and other valuable papers and all kinds of old documents having legal characteristic shall be valid unless they are changed.

 

Article 8 – The application of the Turkish letters to all the Turkish transactions of all banks, privileged and non-privileged companies, associations and institutions can not exceed the first day of January 1929. However, if any application made to the institutions mentioned above by the people with the old Arabic letters until the beginning of June 1929, it shall be accepted. It is permissible to be used printed materials such as books, tables, catalogs, regulations and instructions published in old Arabic letters that are in the posession of these institutions until the beginning of June 1930.

 

Article 9 – Turkish letters shall be used in education made in Turkish language of all schools. Performance of education is prohibited with books printed in old letters.

 

Article 10 – This Law shall be valid from the date of its publication.

 

Article 11 – The Council of Ministers is charged with the execution of the provisions of this Law.
